Around 6 months
Start with soft, easy-to-swallow foods, such as:
- vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, and sweet potato
- fruits like banana, pear, apple, peach, and avocado
- starchy foods like baby cereal, oats, potato, sweet potato, rice, noodles, or porridge
- protein foods like meat, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, and tofu
- plain full-fat yogurt and cheese made with pasteurized milk
Important: Whole cow’s milk can be used in cooking, but it should not be your baby’s main drink before age 1.
Around 7 to 9 months
Keep increasing variety. Your baby can usually eat:
- more vegetables and fruits
- grains, rice, oats, noodles, bread, and potatoes
- meat, fish, eggs, tofu, beans, lentils, and chickpeas
- plain full-fat yogurt and cheese
- lumpier textures and finger foods
This is also a good time to encourage self-feeding with safe finger foods.
Around 10 to 12 months
By this age, many babies can eat:
- a wide range of foods from all main food groups
- mashed, chopped, and more textured foods
- more family-style foods, as long as the texture is safe
- finger foods and regular meals with the family
