What can babies eat at different ages?

Around 6 months

Start with soft, easy-to-swallow foods, such as:

  • vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, and sweet potato
  • fruits like banana, pear, apple, peach, and avocado
  • starchy foods like baby cereal, oats, potato, sweet potato, rice, noodles, or porridge
  • protein foods like meat, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, and tofu
  • plain full-fat yogurt and cheese made with pasteurized milk

Important: Whole cow’s milk can be used in cooking, but it should not be your baby’s main drink before age 1.

Around 7 to 9 months

Keep increasing variety. Your baby can usually eat:

  • more vegetables and fruits
  • grains, rice, oats, noodles, bread, and potatoes
  • meat, fish, eggs, tofu, beans, lentils, and chickpeas
  • plain full-fat yogurt and cheese
  • lumpier textures and finger foods

This is also a good time to encourage self-feeding with safe finger foods.

Around 10 to 12 months

By this age, many babies can eat:

  • a wide range of foods from all main food groups
  • mashed, chopped, and more textured foods
  • more family-style foods, as long as the texture is safe
  • finger foods and regular meals with the family
